Controlling Mold In Your Home

From attic to basement, there are several problem areas in your home that can become the  source of mold infestation.  Here are the most common sources of mold in the home, along with some tips to controlling mold growth.

Bathrooms and Attics

The bathroom is the first place where you might find mildew. Often it is condensation and not a leak that is the source of the moisture for mold and mildew to form. You can use a squeegee to wipe down shower walls after each use.

Bathroom fans that vent directly into the attic rather than directly outside can cause problems. In many cases, moisture from bathroom fans is the primary source of attic mold infestation.

Basements

Many basements walls have cracks in the foundation that can allow water and moisture to seep in. Waterproof coating applied to the basement walls will help keep water from passing from hydrostatic pressure. Outside, your gutters should be clear and should be designed to drain the water far from your home and its foundation.

Even the drip from a slow pipe leak in the basement can cause water damage over time. Your basement floor drainage should be working properly. If necessary, a sump pump should be installed to remove excess water.

Closets and Other Areas

Mold can grow even in closets where there is limited air circulation. A cool wall in a humid room can also attract mold.

Condensation can also form around heating ducts. That’s where you’ll find a moldy patch on the ceiling. The air filters in your heating and air-conditioning system should changed every three months. A dehumidifier can help keep humidity down in limited areas.

Air quality testing should be performed if you think that the home air is causing harm to you or your family. Samples are laboratory inspected and certified, providing official evidence that there is (or is not) mold in your home.

If you need  to clean large areas, such as more than 10 square feet, you should use a contractor that is trained in mold removal.

H&H Environmental performs air quality testing and mold removal services for homes and businesses in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania.
