Mold Toxins in Water-Damaged Buildings Worse Than Thought
According to new research from Lund University in Sweden, mold toxins in buildings damaged by moisture are much more dangerous than previously thought. This research has implications for home sellers and buyers, contractors and insurance companies.
Researchers analyzed 167 dust and material samples from buildings damaged by mold, including some buildings flooded in New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina. It was discovered that 67 percent of the samples contained at least one mold toxin.
The study suggests that toxins produced by mold are more dangerous than was previously considered. The research team will continue to study the health effects of mold. A larger EU study will research the possible connection between the indoor environments in schools and asthma.
The removal of mold helps. A 2007 study published in the scientific journal Thorax indicated that mold remediation relieved symptoms and improved respiratory illnesses in most of the patients that took part in the study.
As new findings of health risks related to mold exposure come to light, it’s important to keep your home mold-free. If you have water damage from a burst or frozen pipe, it’s critical to get the water out and the area cleaned up to prevent future mold growth.
